Automatic towing comes with a hefty fine

Local wreckers are wrecking pocket books. Owner of LADS 24 hours Wrecking Service, Peter Pellt, said the well is state regulated.

If you park somewhere where there are signs, where it's limited parking for a certain property and someone has you towed, the maximum you may charge is $250. Pellt said. I probably would have die to be here for an hour and a semi and be towed and pay that. Williams said.

But before the price was state regulated, tow wheels were paying a lot more than that; upwards of $500 in some city. There are very small manners that happen after the second or third trip from bar to bar at night. Leaving all sorts of residue on the other people's property and not cleaning it up." Pellt said.

There are ways to avoid that towing fee.

If we are hooked up or in the process of loading and you come out, we're to release the car at no charge. Pellt said. But that only if you have extraordinary timing, or if your car was towed illegally. Pellt said illegal hookups happen a lot in Lubbock, often by what he calls mosquito trucks.

They go grab a truck in the parking lot, haul it a block or two. Drop it in the street; go get another on the property and another one. He said. "Then send one of these bigger trucks to bring back 2 or 3 at a time to the yard.

If a vehicle is dropped on the street or at other belongings, the wreckers have no power to pick it up again. If you can prove that is what happened, you can get your cash back via the courts. Other than that, it's likely your money will be locked up just like your car, especially if you are a student.

With Tech kids, it happens about 5% of the time. Pellt said.

Tow truck company driver kill raises fears

The slay of a tow truck driver in Broward County Tuesday is raising safety concerns.Tow truck drivers in our area say no doubt about it, they have a dangerous job.

A tow truck company driver, David Herr, 36, of Hollywood was shot and killed Tuesday in Lauderdale Lakes, after a dispute over a vehicle that he was towing from an apartment.

Some tow truck drivers in West Palm Beach told us such violence qualms them, and one says it has changed the way he does his job.

I pay more attention to my surrounds and what's goin' on around me, said Scott Fugett, a tow truck driver with Sheehan's Towing.

You try to reason with the people, explain to them why you are there. You are just there to do a job. If it doesn't work, then get away. Leave the car there if you have to. It's not worth our life to take that one car, said Adam Taylor, manager of Sheehan's towing who also drives a tow truck.

Some tow truck drivers told us the most important danger they encounter is not being shot, but being hit by a car. They say the largest threat they face is being hit by a motorist when they are stopped on the road anywhere, working a crash scene or helping a disabled vehicle, because some oncoming drivers are not paying attention and do not move over as the law require.

Dreyer new record by swimming 35km while towing

The 49-year-old started his 35-km swim on Monday and plans to end on Tuesday in Detroit.

The holder of a number of world records for endurance swimming, Dreyer said he expect to set one this time for longest distance swimming while towing a ton of bricks - a record that doesn't at present exist.”Nobody has ever pulled a ton of bricks any distance," he said. "Pretty surprising, right?"

He's doing it without a support boat. One of the dinghies is ready with a radar target so Dreyer will show up on radar screens. He has to feed himself and won't leave the water until coming ashore.

Dreyer is swimming with a GPS tracking device that will post his position online. It also comes equipped with a messaging system. At the touch of a button, Dreyer can send out 3 pre-programmed messages.

One lets his crew know he is all right. A second tells them he is not and to send a boat. A 3rd shows that he is in a life-threatening situation and requires immediate Roadside assistance from the Coast Guard.Dreyer is trying to raise money and alertness for Habitat for Humanity.
