Founded by John D. Rockefeller on July 7, 1899, the company’s founding shareholders were the major industrialist at the turn of the century.

Great Lakes Shipyard is a full-service state-of-the-art shipyard specialize in all kind of marine building, fabrication, conversions, refits and repairs for all type of commercial and government vessel, tugs, supply boats, ferries, barges, “truck able” barges, outing vessels, dinner boats, research vessels and big yachts, as well as both on-site and off-site topside work of every kind.

The Great Lakes Towing Company, of which the Shipyard is a part, is a full service transportation company that provides tugboat and towing services, ship assist, logistics and cargo transportation, ice breaking, and emergency assistance of all kind of vessel, barge, and marine construction in 40 U.S. Great Lakes ports located on all 5 Great Lakes and in all 8 U.S.States. 

The Company’s tugboat services cover more than 8,300 miles of shore and a water surface area of roughly 100,000 quadrangle miles, an area legitimately recognized as the nations “fourth seacoast” and equal in distance to any of the other seacoasts.
